CHRISTMAS POETRY

Each year the 5th graders learn to write a poem using different parts of speech. Because it is difficult for students of this age to write poetry I like to teach this because everyone can learn to write a good poem while using the parts of speech we have been learning in language class.  Each poem begins with a noun. The second line of the poem should be 2 adjectives which describe the noun, and the 3rd line should be 3 verbs which show the action of the noun.  The fourth line should be a 5 word phrase about the noun, and the last line is a synonym for the original noun. We first write simple poems about Christmas decorations. The lesson is expanded as we write a 3 stanza poem about the Trinity.  We place this in a hand decorated Christmas card which makes a nice gift.
