RECIPE + FRACTIONS = YUMMY COOKIES!

With the help of 4 very brave mothers the fifth graders spent one morning learning about fractions in a unique way. They made oatmeal scotchies, peanut butter blossoms, and several different types of chocolate chip cookies. This may seem like a very simple task, and it is if one follows a normal cookie recipe but what fun would that be? To reinforce the math the students have learned and to help them see why we change fractions before we add or subtract them we used a recipe that looked like this.
PEANUT BUTTER BLOSSOMS
2/4 cup + 8 tablespoons butter
1/3 + 1/3 cup peanut butter
1/4 + 1/2 + 2/8 cup white sugar
4/8 + 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1/2 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 + 2/4 + 4/8 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/3 + 1/3 cups flour
2/3 + 1/3 + 1/2 + 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 + 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 lb. chocolate kisses
Once the students had measured the ingredients this way, they had to convert the measures to the original recipe, remeasure to be sure they had the correct quantity, and then finish them up. Each student took a dozen cookies home, and we had enough left to share with the other teachers. THE FIFTH GRADERS ARE GREAT COOKS!
See what fun we had.
