Learning is Fun
August and September 2007

Sometimes it's fine to use paper and pencils for learning.  Other times it's fun to put the paper and pencils away and learn in a variety of ways.  Here are some of the creative ways we've been learning so far this year.

Believe it or not, we are eating our math lesson in these pictures!  We were learning about 'between' numbers, so to make sure the 'between' concept stuck, we ate some yummy cookies sandwiches.  The two outside cookies were chocolate chip, and there was a delicious cream BETWEEN the two cookies.  What a tasty way to learn math!

We found a colorful way to practice our new spelling list!  We wrote our words on leaves, colored them the colors of fall, and then put them on a 'spelling tree'.  Don't they look n-i-c-e?

These pictures show us practicing our spelling words.  Sometimes we write our spelling words on paper, but other times we might use letter beads to make them into necklaces or big rubber stamps to stamp them on flashcards.  While half our class works with Mrs. Whitworth in learning centers, the other half goes up to the computer lab with Mrs. Shelton.  The past two weeks we've been learning beginning keyboarding in the computer lab.

In the photos above, we are playing a game called "King and Queen of the Consonants."  It's a really fun game in which we 'walk' up the stairway of consonants until we reach the 'throne'.  At that time we are crowned either king or queen of the consonants.  We'll add some variety by playing it again with vowels included, so then we'll be king or queen of the blends.  What a fun way to review the sounds we've been learning!

In these pictures, we are learning to work together and problem solve by working puzzles and we're learning to continue patterns using pattern links and different sizes of Lego's.  Not only did we practice some of our skills, but we had fun getting to know our classmates better as we worked together.
