First Graders spent some time talking about apples. What a yummy thing to study! We learned all sorts
of things about apples. We learned about John Chapman,
better known as Johnny Appleseed. We learned that there are many
different types of apples, and each variety has its own unique taste
and texture.

We did a little taste test to compare and contrast three
popular
varieties of apples. We tried the Granny Smith, the Golden Delicious,
and the Red Delicious. We thought all three tasted great! The Golden
Delicious was juicy and sweet, as was the Red Delicious. The
Granny Smith was sour and firm and not nearly as juicy. Each first grader
(and a few adult friends) voted for his or her favorite apple of the three.
(We even got a vote all the way from Iraq!) Then we put our results on a graph.

We made our own homemade applesauce by steaming some apples and adding sugar and cinnamon, then smashing the cooked apples with a potato masher. It was delicious!
Finally, we used the leftover apples as stamps and made
beautiful
apple paintings to display in our classroom. We had a wonderful
morning learning about apples, and we hope you enjoy the photos
of our day.

Here we are tasting the different varieties of apples (the Granny Smith was very sour!) and tasting our applesauce.
We did some apple art projects that were lots of fun. We made Johnny Appleseed puppets, we colored an apple tree that illustrated an apple poem, we colored apples in a basket and we did our apple painting. Don't you think we are wonderful artists?
We learned that every apple has a star hidden inside!
